Working with Our Clients During COVID-19

Working with Our Clients During COVID-19

Working with Our Clients During COVID-19. The hospitality industry is reeling from the effects of this national lockdown and restricted trade. GAAP Point-of-Sale is in completely the same boat as we derive all income from rentals and services to the industry. We absolutely understand that this is not business as usual and are working on policies of deferred and adjusted fees that will cater for lockdown / restricted trade periods.

We await further guidance from government about this lockdown and any extensions or restrictions that would apply to our industry post-lockdown. This will guide us in finalising a fee deferment policy that is fair to all. Like all of you, we hope to return to normal trading conditions as soon as possible.

Until then, please remain safe and hope this lockdown achieves the objectives.

What Can You Do?

There are a few avenues you can explore to help your business on the other side of this lockdown.

  • If you have Business Interruption insurance, submit your claim.
  • Claim from the SMME Fund – www.smmesa.gov.za
  • Speak to your bank – most of the major banks have put together relief programmes to assist their customers during this period.
  • The South African Future Trust (SAFT), established by Nicky and Jonathan Oppenheimer, will make funds available to South African businesses impacted by the coronavirus from 3 April 2020. Full details can be found here as well as how to apply: www.businesstech.co.za
  • The Tourism Relief Fund is now open for applications, the application period runs from 7 April 2020 to 30 May 2020. To check if you’re eligible or to submit your application, visit their webste on www.tourism.gov.za.
  • The Sukuma Relief Programme for SMEs has also been established. You can visit the website on finance.businesspartners.co.za – the fund has reached capacity, temporarily. Keep checking the link and submit your application as soon as they re-open.
  • Stay up to date on tax / PAYE / UIF / SDL rebates here: www.gov.za
  • Negotiate with your landlord on rental discounts or payment holidays. The South African Government is also taking steps to help businesses survive this turbulent period and have been publishing a number of gazettes. A recent gazette (Regulation Gazette No.: 11059) reads are follows:
“3.1. Agreements or practices amongst and between designated retail tenants and retail property landlords with the sole purpose of ensuring the survival of tenants of retail properties during the COVID-19 national disaster, which are limited to agreements or practices in respect of: 3.1.1. Payment holidays and/or rental discounts for tenants.
3.1.2. Limitations on the eviction of tenants.
3.1.3. The suspension or adjustment to lease agreement clauses that restrict the designated retail tenants from undertaking reasonable measures required to protect viability during the national disaster.
3.2. To qualify for an exemption, such agreements must extend to all South African retail tenants in the designated retail lines, including small, independent retailers, unless otherwise authorised by the Minister or the Competition Commission.”
    Download the gazette here: www.gpwonline.co.za/Gazettes/Pages/default.aspx
Visit www.gpwonline.co.za to view the Government Gazettes as they are published.
  • Keep an eye on the Restaurant Association of South Africa’s website (www.restaurant.org.za) for important updates and news from Wendy Alberts, CEO of RASA. Wendy is working tirelessly to assist restaurant owners during the lockdown.
